DAMPERS FAQS
Answers to your most Frequently Asked Questions about Greenheck dampers.
Q:
Q:Can a single sided retaining angle be used on a three hour rated damper?
A:
A:No, it is to only be used on a 1-1/2 hour rated damper. There is no UL certification for a three- hour rated damper. Single-side angle on a three-hour rate is not UL qualified.
Q:
Q:Can dynamic closure dampers be multi-sectioned in the field to fill an over-sized opening?
A:
A:Multiple-section dampers must be ordered from the factory as a single unit per UL. The local authority having jurisdiction could approve the multi-section application.
Q:
Q:Can Greenheck supply remote supply test switches?
A:
A:Greenheck India does not supply any test switches.
Q:
Q:Can I have an explosion proof (NEMA 7) or weather proof (NEMA 4) actuator?
A:
A:No. Greenheck India does not offer any NEMA7 or NEMA4 enclosures.
Q:
Q:Can we change actuators on UL listed dampers in the field?
A:
A:The actuator for replacement must be a UL listed actuator on the damper it is being installed on. The quantity of actuators and drive arrangement must also match the UL listing of the damper
Q:
Q:Can we field mount an open close indicator (OCI) kit?
A:
A:Yes, OCI's can be field mounted on VCD and smoke dampers by using the OCI kit. Units less than 279.4 millimeters (11 inches) high with an A dimension of less than 266.7 millimeters (10.5 inches) there will be no room to mount the OCI. Consult the factory on combination fire smoke dampers.
Q:
Q:Do you offer a 24 Vdc actuator for FSD/SMD models?
A:
A:Yes, the Belimo FSLF24 actuator is designed to operate on either 24 Vdc and 24 Vac power. Most other 24 Vac actuators are not designed to operate with 24 Vdc power.
Q:
Q:Does Greenheck have a spring kit to convert a fire damper vertical mount unit to a horizontal mount?
A:
A:No, because any field modification to the original product will void the UL rating
Q:
Q:Does Greenheck manufacture support mullions for fire dampers for field installation?
A:
A:Greenheck does not provide support mullions for fire dampers for field installation, however, we do have supplemental instructions on how to manufacture mullions for static rated curtain dampers. Mullions are not UL approved for dynamic fire dampers.
Q:
Q:What are the running and holding AMPS of certain actuators?
A:
A:This information varies by actuator manufacturer. Exact detail is available on each actuator’s submittal.
Q:
Q:What are typical actuator "running times"?
A:
A:
Electric:
- Belimo - 135 seconds
- Siemens GGD - 15 seconds
- Honeywell FATPA - 15 seconds
- Belimo FSLF & FSNF - 15 seconds
Q:
Q:What hour-rated fire damper do I use in a two hour fire-rated wall?
A:
A:Fire-rated barriers of less than three hours will typically use a 1-1/2-hour rated fire damper. Fire-rated barriers of three hours or more will typically use a three-hour fire rated damper.
Q:
Q:What is the "damper location" under the configuration tab in CAPS?
A:
A:The damper location for all multi-blade models (FSD, SMD, VCD and DFD-210 series) is referred to as the A dimension (distance from end of sleeve to face of damper). The minimum space allowed is 182.575 millimeters (7.188 inches) and is the default in CAPS. The damper location for curtain style fire dampers (FD and DFD) is referred to as the K dimension (distance from end of sleeve to centerline of damper frame).
Q:
Q:What is the difference between an open close indicator (OCI) and an end switch?
A:
A:An OCI kit provides feedback to a control panel, which indicates if the blades are in an open or closed position. An end switch is in the actuator, normally built in as an auxiliary switch for end position indication. Both provide feedback to the control panel. OCI's indication at damper, end switch is at the actuator.
Q:
Q:What is the pressure drop for my specific control damper?
A:
A:Each damper has a pressure drop chart listed on its respective submittal. CAPS also has a performance calculator for 3V models (FSD, SMD, and VCD).
Q:
Q:What does it mean for a fire damper, smoke damper, or combination fire & smoke damper to be UL Classified?
A:
A:First, it means that the damper’s design has been tested per the requirements of the applicable UL 555 series of test standards (UL 555 Fire Dampers or UL 555s Smoke Dampers). Second, it means that the damper was manufactured under UL’s Follow-Up Service Program. The Follow-Up Service Program subjects the dampers to random, unannounced inspections by UL’s follow-up service personnel. The UL inspector compares the construction of the dampers being produced with the manufacturer’s UL Follow-Up Service Procedure, which describes the construction of the dampers that were tested to the requirements of the standard. Any variation between the dampers being produced and the Follow-Up Service Procedure can result in the inspector preventing the damper(s) from shipping with the UL Classification Mark (i.e. the UL label).
Q:
Q:What does the UL Certification Mark signify?
A:
A:The UL Classification mark simply signifies that a damper was produced under UL’s Follow-Up Service Program and therefore met the requirements of the manufacturer’s Follow-Up Service Procedure when it left the factory. As such, any changes to the damper after it leaves the factory fall outside the scope of the UL’s Follow-Up Service Program.
Q:
Q:If a damper is UL Classified, can any changes be made after it leaves the factory?
A:
A:Although changes to a UL classified damper fall outside the scope of UL’s Follow-Up Service Program, it does not necessarily preclude making changes. The damper’s construction must still comply with the manufacturer’s Follow-Up Service Procedure after the changes are made. Any field modification will need final approval from the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ).
Q:
Q:What is a UL Field Inspection?
A:
A:In some cases, those involved may decide that 3rd party verification is necessary to conform that the damper still complies with the Follow-Up Service Procedure after changes have been made. For this reason, UL offers its field inspection service. Only the manufacturer of the damper(s) can request a field inspection. After a field inspection is conducted, the UL representative will issue a report detailing whether or not the damper(s) still complies with the Follow-Up Service Procedure.
